Cotton, modal or microfibre: choosing by climate
The same bra can feel wonderful in December and unbearable in June. Fabric is why.
Cotton
Breathable, absorbent, and kind to sensitive skin. Cotton takes up moisture rather than repelling it, which keeps you cool but means it holds damp for longer on a humid day. Best for everyday wear, hot dry weather, and anyone whose skin reacts to synthetics.
Modal
Made from beech pulp, modal is softer than cotton, drapes better, and dries faster. It resists the stiff, chalky feel cotton develops after many washes. Best for nightwear and loungewear, and for anyone who wants cotton comfort with a smoother finish.
Microfibre and poly blends
Smooth, light, and quick-drying. Microfibre pulls moisture away from the skin instead of soaking it up, which is why sports bras use it. It gives the cleanest line under fitted clothing. Less breathable than cotton in still, humid air.
What to wear when
- Peak summer, everyday: cotton, with a wireless or soft-cup style
- Workouts: microfibre or a poly-elastane knit — it dries while you move
- Under fitted clothes: seamless microfibre for the smoothest line
- Sleep: modal or satin-touch, loose through the body
- Winter: cotton or a brushed knit, layered
How to make any of them last
Hand wash cold, never wring, and dry flat in shade. Heat destroys elastane, and elastane is what holds the shape. A bra washed properly lasts two years; the same bra tumble-dried lasts six months.
